Put Your Purple On

She told me she had Lupus.  I didn’t immediately react.  Lupus wasn’t a common word in my vocabulary.  A world of thoughts and emotions went through my mind as she explained to me what this chronic autoimmune disease is doing to her body.   My cousin Dina has been battling multiple symptoms of Lupus, including muscle loss, arthritis and neurological problems for the past 3 years.  There were many doctors’ appointments, tests and medications.  They blamed parenthood, sleep deprivation and even tried a diagnosis of depression.  But she knew in her heart it was something more.  My cousin wouldn’t settle until she found the answer.  She was finally led to a doctor that understood her symptoms and test results.  Then she heard the words, “Dina you have Lupus.”  What is Lupus?!? And there is no cure…how many people have it? How do you get it? We need to get the word out…

May is Lupus Awareness month.  I had the honor of photographing the ‘Seattle Great Wheel is Turning Purple Event’ on Friday, May 17th.   The Seattle Ferris Wheel lit up in the most beautiful shade of purple for all of Seattle to see as the sun was setting on the historic Friday evening.  Family and friends shared stories and tears were shed.  Steve Raible from KIRO TV Channel 7 News spoke about his wife and her battle with Lupus. The speeches ended with the sharing of the Lupus Proclamation signed by our Governor Jay Inslee proclaiming that May is designated Lupus Awareness month for the State of Washington.

Through body aches and fatigue, they find the strength to continue laughing, smiling and dancing.  They’ve inspired me to live life to the fullest even when hope seems lost.  If you’d like to inspire and give hope to find a cure for Lupus, feel free to read more about Lupus and see how you can help.

Here are a few pics from that afternoon.

Enjoy…

It’s the Month of May…Put Your Purple On!
